Ellis Wears Braids

Ellis Wears Braids
By Heather Leigh and Judy Ziegler

Ellis had useful hair.

It kept her feet dry.

She always had a jump rope.

And she always won at tug-of-war.

But then her hair got caught in a tree.
"My hair is not so useful now," she told the birds.

Mother bird went to get help.

The baby birds shared their toys while they waited.
"I wonder who your mother will get to help me?" asked Ellis.

"Monkeys!!!" cried Ellis.
Mother Bird had gotten monkeys--

and they were playing with her hair!

"STOP!" cried Ellis
The monkeys stopped their play
to stare at Ellis.
She showed the monkeys that she was stuck.
Monkeys are clever.
They gently pulled her hair out of the branches.

"Thank you," she told each monkey.

Ellis still has useful hair.
But now when she climbs a tree, she wears braids.
